"The American road in all its recalcitrant splendour: large cars, large signs, large spaces, large dreams and promises of freedom now abandoned. Leah Frances catalogues this suspended mythology; a departure point for dark and dreamy stories." — Double Decker UK
(2020-ongoing)
This project started during my MFA at The Tyler School of Art, partially inspired by a fellow student. One day she said, “I welcome people to photograph me painting. There are so few pictures of women, and women of color, in the history of art.” I briefly worked on the Obituaries Desk at The New York Times. My friend was not wrong. There may be images of artists with their families, or as children, but making their art? The photos are few. I recently decided to resume photographing female-identifying artists, artists of color, LGBTQIA+ artists, and disabled artists in the environments where they make their work. The ongoing result is here. Thank you for seeing.
